UNDERGROUND WASTE MANAGEMENT

ScanSun Oy, in collaboration with HABA-Nordic Oy has created the organization of waste collection in narrow city center blocks so that residents can use more yard space for themselves. The existing 240- and 600-liter wheeled trash cans in the yards will be replaced by underground trash compactors and trash can lifts. The example is designed for a typical early 20th century residential block. Eight apartment associations operate around a small enclosed yard and about 500-700 residents live in them. Each cooperative has its own fenced area in the yard, as well as its own waste containers and its own waste management contract. There are about 120 containers in the yard. According to sorting requirements, more and more waste containers are created. Due to the requirements of the Rescue Board, the containers fill the entire common outdoor area due to the minimum distance.

In this plan, the trash cans in all yards will be replaced with underground 5-6 m3 garbage compactors and container elevators. As part of the plan, 120-150 trash cans left outside will be replaced by a few litter boxes.

The yard is thus designed as a common outdoor park for all apartment associations, with lawns, plantings, playgrounds, etc. The underground 5-6 m3 compactor compresses the waste 5 times, so it can hold approximately 25-30 m3 of waste (waste of more than 100 240-liter items). The discharge interval is significantly longer. Waste transport is organized by light trucks, which fit very well through low and narrow gate corridors. In big cities, where the buildings are old and the blocks and streets are narrow, these light trucks can easily cope. A great advantage of removing above-ground waste containers is that odors, rodents, birds and other environmental hazards are also removed.
